The developer envisioned a mural that would reflect and uplift the diverse residential population and surrounding community. They sought artwork that would incorporate bold colors and cultural representation, while serving as a welcoming backdrop for the property’s central open-air courtyard, designed as a safe, communal space for residents to gather, socialize, exercise, and play.

Here we partnered with Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya, an award-winning Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary artist, educator, and community builder. Known for her vibrant storytelling and for amplifying marginalized voices, Amanda was a natural fit for a project centered on community, identity, and empowerment.

“Of Roots and Winds” depicts a powerful gathering of intergenerational women of color standing fierce and free, their presence shaping and nurturing the world around them. Elements of local flora and fauna—prickly pear cactus, white sage, bush sunflower, and a blue heron—surround the figures, reflecting their beauty, strength, and resilience. The piece serves not only as a visual landmark but as a daily reminder of community pride and shared cultural roots.
