Neighborhood Inspiration

Metro @ Florence – South Los Angeles, CA

Affordable Housing Development – 170 Units

THE PROJECT

Metro @ Florence is a new 170-unit affordable housing community located in the Florence-Firestone neighborhood of South Los Angeles. Designed to provide high-quality housing for individuals and families earning below the area median income, the development is rooted in a community known for its rich history, culture, and resilience.

Located along the Florence Avenue corridor at a major Metro transit hub, the project serves as a vibrant gateway for commuters and neighborhood residents alike. The developer envisioned a signature lobby artwork that would reflect the character of the surrounding community while creating a warm, welcoming environment for residents and visitors.

THE ARTIST

Heavens Media collaborated with internationally renowned Los Angeles artist Patrick Martinez to create the project’s featured artwork. Known for his socially conscious practice and distinctive visual language, Martinez has become one of the leading voices in contemporary art.

His deep connection to Los Angeles and longstanding exploration of the city’s neighborhoods made him an ideal collaborator for this project.

THE OUTCOME

Patrick Martinez created an original, site-specific artwork inspired by the Florence-Firestone neighborhood itself. Drawing from the geometric mosaic sign towers, the vibrant colors and textures of local piñata and candy shops, and the iconic rose sculptures that reference both Los Angeles flower vendors and neighborhood memorials (descansos), the piece captures the spirit and visual identity of the community.

The finished artwork is both vibrant and deeply rooted in place—transforming the lobby into a welcoming cultural landmark that celebrates the neighborhood’s history, resilience, and everyday beauty. By authentically reflecting the community it serves, the installation creates a lasting sense of pride, belonging, and connection for residents and visitors alike.
